Minister Urges Nigerian Youths to Embrace AI and Robotics for Economic Growth

The Minister for Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande Wisdom, has called on Nigerian youths to actively embrace emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and robotics as key drivers of innovation, entrepreneurship, and national economic transformation.

Speaking at a youth training and innovation competition in Abuja, the Minister emphasized that Nigeria’s future economic strength will depend largely on how well its young population adapts to global technological changes.

The event, organised by NextWear Technologies in partnership with the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), brought together young innovators, educators, and technology stakeholders to explore opportunities in science and digital innovation.

Represented by Chief Obinna Nwaka, the Minister noted that AI and robotics are reshaping industries worldwide and creating new pathways for employment, creativity, and economic development.

He urged young Nigerians to move beyond traditional career expectations and position themselves within the global digital economy, stressing the importance of acquiring relevant technical and problem-solving skills.

According to him, while challenges such as unequal access to technology and limited digital infrastructure remain—especially in rural areas—government initiatives and private sector partnerships are working to bridge the gap.

“The government is committed to ensuring that no young Nigerian is left behind in this digital transformation,” he said, highlighting investments in innovation hubs, education, and digital connectivity.

Speakers at the event also emphasized the importance of practical exposure to technology. The programme organiser, Kemisola Bolarinwa, explained that hands-on training and competitions are essential for building confidence and preparing youths for careers in STEM fields.

Similarly, ITU West Africa representative Ali Drissa Badiel described the initiative as a strategic investment in Africa’s future, noting that AI presents an opportunity for the continent to close long-standing development gaps.

He encouraged African youths to leverage digital tools to innovate in areas such as agriculture, healthcare, and manufacturing, adding that early exposure to technology is critical for long-term success.

Winners of the competition, according to STEM Garages Africa Founder Engr. Ronald Ajiboye, will have the opportunity to represent Nigeria at an international STEM event in Geneva later this year.

Overall, stakeholders at the event agreed that stronger collaboration between government, private sector, and international partners is essential to unlocking the full potential of Nigerian youths in the rapidly evolving digital economy.
