Nigerian Lawmaker Urges Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Education

A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Kolawole Akinlayo, has raised concerns about the growing reliance on artificial intelligence among students, warning that excessive dependence on digital tools could undermine critical thinking and academic excellence.

Speaking in Abuja while receiving the 2026 Excellence in Leadership, Service, and Community Impact Award from the National Association of Nigerian Students, the lawmaker emphasized the need for a balanced and ethical approach to technology in education.

The Risk of Overdependence on AI

According to Kolawole Akinlayo, while artificial intelligence has the potential to enhance learning outcomes, its misuse is becoming a growing concern. He noted that many students increasingly rely on digital tools to complete assignments and academic tasks, often at the expense of independent thinking and intellectual development.

He stressed that technology should serve as a support system—not a replacement—for human reasoning.

“Artificial intelligence should be used to enhance learning, not to replace the thinking process. Students must develop the ability to analyze, reason, and solve problems independently,” he stated.

Call for Ethical Guidance from Parents and Educators

The lawmaker also called on parents and educators to play a more active role in guiding students toward responsible technology use. He highlighted the importance of strong moral foundations and discipline, noting that access to digital tools without proper supervision can lead to misuse.

In addition to academic concerns, he pointed to issues such as unethical online behavior and digital fraud among some students, attributing these trends partly to gaps in parental guidance and value-based education.

Bridging Technology and Academic Excellence

Kolawole Akinlayo argued that modern learning tools should ideally produce more outstanding academic results. However, he observed that this potential is not being fully realized due to improper usage patterns.

He advocated for a renewed focus on:

  • Critical thinking and independent learning
  • Ethical digital practices
  • Structured guidance from educators and families

Recognition and Commitment to Student Development

The award presented by the National Association of Nigerian Students recognizes the lawmaker’s contributions to youth empowerment and education. As part of his initiatives, he has introduced financial support programs for students in his constituency, including bursaries and additional incentives for high academic achievers.

He reaffirmed his commitment to advancing student welfare and supporting educational development across Nigeria.

NANS Commends Leadership and Impact

President of NANS, Olusola Oladoja, noted that the award followed a comprehensive evaluation of leaders contributing to student development nationwide.

He highlighted Kolawole Akinlayo’s role in youth-focused initiatives and policy contributions, including involvement in the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which has provided financial support to many students.

“This recognition reflects exemplary leadership, dedication to national development, and a strong commitment to empowering young people,” he stated.

A Broader Conversation on AI in Education

The discussion reflects a growing global debate on the role of artificial intelligence in education. While AI offers powerful tools for learning and productivity, experts continue to stress the importance of maintaining human creativity, ethical standards, and intellectual independence.
