World Press Freedom Day 2026: Southwest NUJ Advocates for Journalist Safety and Responsible AI Use
The Southwest Zone of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has called for enhanced protection of journalists and greater accountability in the use of artificial intelligence, as part of activities marking World Press Freedom Day 2026.
In a statement commemorating the global event, the union joined media organizations worldwide in highlighting this year’s theme: “Shaping a Future of Peace: Promoting Press Freedom for Human Rights, Development, and Security.”
Global Significance of Press Freedom
World Press Freedom Day, established by the United Nations in 1993, serves as a platform to evaluate the state of press freedom globally, defend media independence, and honor journalists who have lost their lives in the line of duty.
This year’s international conference is organized by UNESCO in collaboration with the Government of Zambia, and is scheduled to take place in Lusaka from May 4–5, 2026.
According to Ronke Afebioye-Samo, press freedom remains a cornerstone of democratic societies.
“Peace is built on truth, accountability, and the free flow of information,” she stated, emphasizing the enduring relevance of Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Key Challenges Facing Press Freedom in Nigeria
The Southwest NUJ outlined three major concerns currently affecting journalism practice in Nigeria:
1. Safety and Protection of Journalists
The union expressed deep concern over increasing incidents of harassment, intimidation, and physical attacks on journalists, particularly during election coverage, protests, and communal conflicts.
It urged security agencies and government authorities to take decisive action by investigating and prosecuting offenders.
“A journalist operating under fear cannot effectively hold power accountable. Ending impunity is critical to safeguarding press freedom,” the statement noted.
2. Artificial Intelligence and the Spread of Disinformation
While acknowledging the benefits of AI in enhancing reporting efficiency and fact-checking, the union warned about its potential misuse in spreading misinformation and deepfakes.
The statement emphasized the need for responsible innovation, urging media organizations to invest in AI literacy and verification tools.
“Technological advancement must be matched with accountability. Media professionals need the capacity to identify AI-generated misinformation, while technology platforms must ensure transparency in content moderation,” it added.
The NUJ Southwest Zone also pledged to prioritize training programs focused on AI awareness and ethical digital practices for its members.
3. Access to Information and Journalist Welfare
The union called for the full implementation of the Freedom of Information Act across all levels of government, stressing that access to accurate data is essential for national development.
It further highlighted ongoing welfare challenges within the media industry, including delayed salaries, poor remuneration, and lack of insurance coverage for journalists.
“Journalists’ welfare should be treated as a national priority. A vulnerable press cannot effectively defend democracy,” Afebioye-Samo emphasized.
Commitment to Strengthening Journalism Practice
The Nigeria Union of Journalists reaffirmed its commitment to advancing professional standards by:
- Promoting conflict-sensitive reporting
- Engaging policymakers on stronger legal protections
- Partnering with civil society to improve access to public information
A Call for Collective Action
As the world reflects on the importance of a free and independent press, the union called on all stakeholders—including government, media organizations, and the public—to support a safer and more sustainable journalism ecosystem.
“Peace, human rights, and development depend on a press that is free, protected, and empowered. The responsibility to safeguard this future lies with all of us,” the statement concluded.
